LGBTQ* Center Fund for Excellence

The LGBTQ* Center Fund for Excellence directly supports Stony Brook University’s LGBTQ* Center and Services. The center symbolizes the university’s longstanding commitment to supporting our LGBTQ* communities. Since opening in 2018, the LGBTQ* Center has worked with key campus partners to create and implement campus-wide policies that support LGBTQ* students, faculty and staff, launch programs to educate the campus community about LGBTQ* people and topics, and elevate and celebrate the voices, ideas and experiences of our dynamic and intersectional LGBTQ* communities.

This year, to mark 2025, our goal is to reach 25 donors!

Your generous contribution will support:

• Building community for LGBTQ* students.
• Providing space and opportunities for personal learning and growth.
• Offering important social and educational programming for our communities.
• Continuing outreach efforts through various media and events to educate about topics concerning LGBTQ* students, as well as available resources and opportunities.
• Fostering continued partnerships focused on creating an affirming learning and working environment for our LGBTQ* communities.
• Celebrating milestones and accomplishments with LGBTQ* students.
• Hosting internships for students to develop their leadership qualities.

“When I first visited Stony Brook University, seeing the colorful pride flags in the LGBTQ* Center window was one of the factors that drew me to enroll in this college. Coming from a town with a limited amount of visibility for LGBTQ+ communities, the LGBTQ* Services team’s outreach and campus-wide initiatives allowed me to flourish and learn as my true self. I really feel a sense of belonging with the acceptance and friendliness of the people here. Also, having a place on campus to just relax and get support is immeasurably valuable to me as both a student and a person. The center truly cares and advocates for students, and I can’t imagine my university experience without it and the impacts it has made!”

“The LGBTQ* Center provides a space for studying as well as space for just existing comfortably. Every single one of my friends is from the center because the people here are accepting and very friendly, and the interns are helpful even with completely unrelated topics. Whenever I had a question, I could just go ask someone at the center, and they could either answer it or help me figure out whom to ask. On top of that, the center fights for LGBTQ students. I was the president of the LGBTQ club at my previous school, and the students had to do all of the fighting for bathrooms, etc., but here, the center shares some of that burden. Because the center fought for gender-inclusive housing, I wasn’t afraid to come live on campus in my first semester when I didn’t know anyone. Also, the center maintains a map of the all-gender bathrooms on campus, so I wasn’t worried when I first came here about whether or not I would have a bathroom that I could use.”
